Critter Encounter in Nature's Neighborhood

Teachers! Add an up close encounter to your field trip this spring with a Critter Encounter. These 20 minute programs feature 2 live animals and a brief look at an important life science topic. Programs take place in Nature's Neighborhood and can accommodate 35 people.

Choose between 3 topics: Predators and Prey, Camouflage and Color, or Reptiles

4 times: 10:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 12:45 p.m.

Classroom Adventures

These 45-minute classroom experiences delve deeper into science concepts and skills and include 3 live animal encounters. Our experienced educators will explore life science through hands-on activities and investigations. Programs take place in the Carson Family Education Center and can accommodate up to 40 people.

Wild Walks

These 45 to 60 minute tours explore one of our popular exhibits. Classes will be divided into groups of 30. Concurrent tours are available to accommodate larger groups.

Distance Learning


Creature Feature

Utilizing web based distance learning sites (Zoom, Skype, etc.), Zoo staff will connect with students in their classroom to meet live animals while exploring a science topic.

Virtual Classroom Presentation

Wednesday, September 19 is our 8th annual Homeschool Open House.

Utilizing video conferencing equipment or web based distance learning sites (Zoom, Skype, etc.), Zoo staff will connect with students in their classroom to discover a life science topic with support from animal videos and live animals.

Camps and Overnights


Winter Camp

Drop your child off at the Zoo for a winter adventure. Your child will experience non-stop fun with exciting exhibit tours, amazing animal visitors, cool crafts and goofy games. All camps run 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, and children can sign up for just one or more. This is a great way to be active during a school break. Participants must be ages 5-10 years.

  • December 27 - Survivor: Winter Wildlife
    • Can you survive winter? Learn how our animal friends deal with snow, ice and cold!
  • December 28 - Mini Junior Zookeeper
    • Discover what it takes to be a Zookeeper in this mini version of our older kids camp.
  • January 3 - Polar Pals
    • Animals that live in the North and South Poles are built for extreme weather. From penguins to polar bears, join us to see how they live.
  • January 4 - Excellent Enrichment
    • Animals at the Zoo get enrichment almost every sing day. Take a look at all the ways we keep our animals busy in the winter and make some cool enrichment for one of our animals!

Winter Junior Zoo Keeper

Your child can be a Zookeeper for the day and explore how we take care of our amazing animal collections. Behind the scenes tours, keeper meet and greets, and hands on husbandry make this camp a must for animal lovers. All camps run 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, and children can sign up for just one or more. This is a great way to be active during a school break. Participants must be ages 11-12 years.

Animal Tours and Experiences


Reef Tank Feed and Aquarium Behind-the-Scenes Tour

Tour the Toledo Zoo’s historic Aquarium, including the 90,000 gallon Coral Reef where you will get the opportunity to feed over 20 species of fish. You will be able to see the Aquarium before the Zoo opens, marine species that are not yet on exhibit, and the incredible process that brings the Aquarium to life! This walking tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.

*Zoo admission fees are not included in tour ticket prices; admission tickets must be purchased online to accompany your tour entrance.

Ambassador Animal Encounter in Nature's Neighborhood

Get up close and personal with many of the Toledo Zoo’s Animal Ambassadors. On this tour, great for all ages, you will meet animals that are normally only seen on our special programs. This walking tour lasts approximately 25 minutes. Please note, children under 5 are not permitted to touch any reptiles due to animal handling protocols.

Elephant Training Session and Behind-the-Scenes Tour

Tour the facility that houses our four African elephants and learn about care practices. This training session is an opportunity for you to see the true intelligence of these amazing animals, as well as an opportunity for us to show you how it contributes to the health and well being of our animals. You will get an insight into our elephants’ favorite snacks and enrichment all while being guided by a zookeeper who cares for these giants every day.

This walking tour lasts approximately 45 minutes. Please note - there will be no guest contact with the elephants during the tour and the training session will be on the opposite side of a safety barrier.

Penguin Encounter and Aviary Feed

This special encounter with some of the Zoo’s penguins will give you a behind-the-scenes look at the housing facility for our African penguins and special insight into what it takes to care for a colony of flightless birds. Afterwards, you’ll tour the Zoo's Aviary kitchen and participate in a feed at a bird exhibit! This walking tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Cheetah Encounter and Behind the Scenes Tour

Go behind-the-scenes for your very own guided tour of our cheetah facility, where you will not only meet our three brothers but also watch an enrichment feeding. You will learn about all the hard work and great care that go into keeping our cats healthy. This walking tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Galapagos Tortoise Encounter with Reptile House Tour

During this tour, you will have an inside look at the day in the life of a herpetologist. You will have the opportunity to get up close to and touch Emerson, our Galapagos tortoise. But your tour wouldn’t be complete without your behind-the-scenes look at our historic reptile house and the reptile giants that inhabit it. This walking tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Meet our three red pandas and explore their Primate Forest outdoor exhibits. *This walking tour will last approximately 35 minutes
